Skippyjon No: Confronting Mis- and Under-representation of BIPOC Identities in Children\u2019s Literature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, there were more animal characters in children\u2019s literature than Black, Asian, Latinx, or Indigenous characters combined. This underrepresentation is further compounded by glaring misrepresentations that often invoke harmful stereotypes of race, culture, and ethnicity. BU Wheelock Language & Literacy experts Dr. Laura Jimenez and Dr. Andrea Bien explore authentic versus inauthentic representation, empowering narratives, and what is possible in elementary classrooms filled with rich diverse literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panelists discuss how teacher educators and educator preparation programs can ensure that pre-service teachers are adequately prepared for emergent educational realities.
