NCIL is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and was formerly housed at the University of Oregon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be able to collaborate with faculty across BU Wheelock and Boston University toward improving outcomes for marginalized and vulnerable children and communities,\u201d says NCIL Director Hank Fien, whose work focuses on developing tools and technologies to support teachers to provide effective reading instruction for diverse learners in the school setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fien joins BU Wheelock as a professor in the Teaching &amp; Learning department. In addition, four other NCIL faculty members have joined BU Wheelock, including <a href=\"https:\/\/id-kayla.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/lana-edwards-santoro\/\">Lana Edwards Santoro<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/id-kayla.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/nancy-j-nelson\/\">Nancy J. Nelson<\/a>, Marissa Pilger Suhr, and <a href=\"https:\/\/id-kayla.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/scott-baker\/\">Scott Baker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to welcome the whole NCIL team to BU Wheelock,\u201d shares Dean David Chard. \u201cTheir work is critical in supporting students with literacy-related disabilities and I know they will be an incredible asset to the BU Wheelock community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Literacy resources for parents, schools, and more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NCIL\u2019s work focuses on topics such as evidence-based reading assessment and instruction, family literacy, and screening, identification, and treatment for dyslexia. The center develops resources for parents and families, schools and districts, and state agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNCIL\u2019s work to ensure that&nbsp;students with literacy-related disabilities have the opportunity to benefit from evidence-based practices and science of reading-centered instruction is a continual guidepost that focuses our work on helping students become proficient readers and writers,\u201d explains Santoro, a research professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BU Wheelock is home to, and affiliated with, more than a dozen centers, laboratories, and institutes that support our faculty\u2019s scholarly missions and provide invaluable research opportunities and educational resources to students and community partners.
