As part of the Holmes Program, participants receive mentorship, peer support, and professional development opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, BU Wheelock\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/id-kayla.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/55577\/\">Efe Shavers<\/a>, a third-year doctoral student in applied human development, was named a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aacte.org\/programs-and-services\/holmes-program\/\">Holmes Scholar<\/a>. As a new Holmes Scholar, Shavers was able to attend the recent AACTE annual meeting to meet with other program participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Holmes conference during AACTE was life-changing for me,\u201d says Shavers. \u201cTo be in a room filled with people of color partaking in excellence while supporting each other was very inspiring.\u201d Shavers hopes to present at AACTE next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEfe\u2019s research focuses on critically conscious teacher pedagogy and contextual issues around resilience and success of youth from historically marginalized groups,\u201d says BU Wheelock\u2019s Tina Durand, who is Shavers\u2019 advisor. \u201cHer work fits beautifully with the mission of the Holmes Scholars Program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Holmes Scholars at BU Wheelock <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At BU Wheelock, the Holmes Scholar Program is supported by Mike Dennehy, executive director of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/id-kayla.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/z-old-website-structure\/research-action\/college-access-student-success\/\">College Access and Student Success<\/a>, and Beth Warren, Sylvia Earl Professor &amp; director of the Earl Center for Learning &amp; Innovation, Detris Adelabu, clinical professor of applied human development, and Andrea Bien, clinical assistant professor of elementary education. We spoke with several Holmes Program participants, both current and recent, about where they are now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Shana Rochester, PhD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Shana Rochester was one of BU Wheelock&#8217;s inaugural Holmes Scholars<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019m currently assistant director and research associate at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County\u2019s Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Jeana E. Morrison, PhD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jean Morrison was one of BU Wheelock&#8217;s inaugural Holmes Scholars<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently:<\/strong> Morrison is currently an assistant professor of ethnic studies at Albion College. She also serves as the director of academic innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Dana Dunwoody, PhD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>One of BU Wheelock\u2019s inaugural&nbsp;Holmes Scholars, Dana Dunwoody was the first scholar to complete her PhD with the program.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cI recently completed a postdoc placement with BU Wheelock\u2019s Earl Center for Learning and Innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Makeaela Jones<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>One of BU Wheelock\u2019s inaugural&nbsp;Holmes Master\u2019s Scholars<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cI am in a PhD program at the University of California, Berkeley.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Ava Jackson, PhD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Holmes Postdoctoral Associate<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cI\u2019m currently working with Dr. Beth Warren and the Earl Center for Learning and Innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Rafael Villa, Jr.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Holmes Master\u2019s Scholar<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently: \u201c<\/strong>I am excited to be part of a community of BIPOC people invested in education. Personally, I am getting my MAT in mathematics at BU, so this semester I am in the classroom every day teaching math.
