Rebecca Shangraw, BU Wheelock lecturer in applied human development, has been named to the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) All-State School Committee. Shangraw, who was recently reelected to a second term on the Weymouth School Committee, is one of only 10 school committee members in the state to receive the annual recognition.

Director of BU Wheelock’s master’s program in applied human development, Shangraw researches teaching practices to use when instructing physical education students or athletes who have specific learning disabilities, such as ADHD and autism.

Shangraw was nominated by the other members of the Weymouth School Committee, who wrote in their nomination letter that she “often represents the voices of those who are not able to speak for themselves.” Serving on school committee is a natural extension of her commitment to positive youth development, says Shangraw.

“I believe schools are the foundation of every community, and I am grateful that I’m in a position to serve my community as a school committee member every day,” she says.

As a school committee member, Shangraw has chaired the labor negotiations subcommittee and created research-based metrics for the district to use while making school reopening decisions following closures related to COVID-19. She was also the first openly LGBTQ+ community member to win an elected seat in Weymouth.
