Highlights from Our Recent Webinars
What Google Search Data Tells Us About Inequality in Online Learning During the Pandemic
BU Wheelock’s Dr. Joshua Goodman and Dr. Andrew Bacher-Hicks examine how pandemic-induced school closures affected students’ and their families’ engagement with online learning resources. In this webinar, Goodman and Bacher-Hicks discuss how policymakers and school leaders can formulate more effective responses to educational disruptions caused by COVID-19.
Meeting the Moment: Teaching During Periods of Social Change
This webinar examines how educators can make the most of this critical moment in the United States without exploiting those most impacted by the injustices we seek to address. Featuring BU Wheelock’s Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Raul Fernandez, Assistant Professor Christina Dobbs, Clinical Assistant Professor Davena Jackson, and Gavin Smith, Associate Head of School at Boston Public School’s Fenway High School.
Skippyjon No: Confronting Mis- and Under-representation of BIPOC Identities in Children’s Literature
In 2018, there were more animal characters in children’s literature than Black, Asian, Latinx, or Indigenous characters combined. This underrepresentation is further compounded by glaring misrepresentations that often invoke harmful stereotypes of race, culture, and ethnicity. BU Wheelock Language & Literacy experts Dr. Laura Jimenez and Dr. Andrea Bien explore authentic versus inauthentic representation, empowering narratives, and what is possible in elementary classrooms filled with rich diverse literature.
Reimagining Teacher Education: Preparing Educators for a Post-COVID World
Perhaps nowhere has the reality of a 2020 transformation been more palpably felt than in K–12 education, and it is unlikely that schools will emerge from this period unchanged. The panelists discuss how teacher educators and educator preparation programs can ensure that pre-service teachers are adequately prepared for emergent educational realities. Featuring Rob Martinelle, BU Wheelock Lecturer in Curriculum & Teaching and Social Studies Education; Sandra Sarucia, Manager of Educator Preparation, MA Dept of Elementary & Secondary Education; Sujeidy Palmer, Managing Director of Teacher Preparation, Teach for America; Jennifer Hedrington, 2021, Massachusetts Teacher of the Year; Chandra Joseph-Lacet, New Teacher Developer, Boston Public Schools; and Dr. Jalene Tamerat, Dean, The Charles Sposato Graduate School of Education.
